Exploring Mere Christianity 3
The Significance of Jesus
Either this man was, and is, the Son of God; or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to. ~ C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
Exploring Mere Christianity is a series of seminars by notable scholars that focuses on the central beliefs of Christianity discussed in C.S. Lewis’s book Mere Christianity. Lewis’s book, one of the most influential of the 20th century, demonstrates how the essential beliefs and practices of the Christian faith make the most sense of our fundamental longings and questions.
We invite you to attend the third seminar in the series, The Significance of Jesus, on Saturday, January 28, with presenter Dr. Gary Habermas.
Session 1: Who Is Jesus and Why Does His Identity Matter?
There are a plethora of voices in our day seeking to provide answers to the question of the identity of Jesus. In Mere Christianity, Lewis pointed to the importance of Jesus’s claim to divinity through what is known as the “Trilemma” (liar, lunatic, or Lord). This session will seek to answer the question, What did Jesus and the early Christians actually claim about his identity? The answer will be found by examining two titles that Jesus used: “Son of God” and “Son of Man.” We will also consider the significance of Jesus identity for us today.
Session 2: The Resurrection of Jesus—Meaning and Evidence
As Lewis wrote about the early followers of Jesus, “to preach Christianity meant to preach the Resurrection.” This session will examine the earliest eyewitness evidence for Jesus’s resurrection using only sources that contemporary critical scholars accept as historical. We will also look at some implications of the resurrection for apologetics and life.
Session 3: Q & A
These presentations will enable those who attend:
-
To develop a clearer understanding of what the early Christians believed and taught about the identity of Jesus
-
To better understand the significance of Jesus in relationship to the larger narrative of the Bible
-
To better grasp the historical evidence for the resurrection of Jesus
-
To develop some points of contact for sharing the gospel with others
