In John 12, Mary, the sister of Lazarus, anoints Jesus with costly perfume worth a year’s wages and wipes His feet with her hair. The house fills with fragrance. When Judas objects, Jesus gently defends her: “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial” (John 12:7, NIV).
Mary’s act of worship points ahead to the cross. The fragrance that filled the room foreshadows the immeasurable cost of Christ’s sacrifice.
While others questioned the extravagance, Mary responded with wholehearted love. Her devotion reflects the heart of the gospel itself: “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
Through His death, we are given new life. Rescued from sin and death, we are freed to love Him deeply and to share His love generously with others.
