“Even my close friend in whom I trusted … has lifted his heel against me.” — Psalm 41:9
Maundy Thursday reminds us that nothing in Holy Week was unexpected to Jesus — not even betrayal.
At the Last Supper, the King of kings washed His disciples’ feet and spoke of His coming sacrifice. Then, in John 13:21–30, He said plainly, “One of you will betray me.” The disciples could not imagine it. When Jesus dismissed Judas, they assumed he was buying supplies or giving to the poor.
But Psalm 41:9 had foretold it. Jesus would be handed over by a friend — for 30 pieces of silver, the price associated with a slave (Exodus 21).
If you have known betrayal, Maundy Thursday speaks directly to you. Your King was betrayed, too. He understands relational pain.
He stepped into it willingly — to redeem us.
