Here is an update from Kevin:
We have returned from Poland with a few new things: a new perspective, new friends, a new
prayer.
Our team of Americans left Atlanta not very confident that all of us would be able to board the
flight since a few of us were not vaccinated (fully) but God gave us the perfect ticketing agent
and we all boarded and didn’t even have to pay for our many extra humanitarian luggage!
The 1 st full day in Poland we visited Auschwitz/Berkinau. The tour deeply affected us all and
words do not capture the depth of darkness we experienced as we listened to the history
being recounted at the largest of all the Nazi death camps.
But the smiles, enthusiasm, and energy of all the children and moms that we enjoyed the
following days gave us a new perspective. They are currently in the middle of hardship and
we witnessed genuine people in the midst of struggle and it gave us a new perspective, well
not new, but newly refreshed in our hearts and minds → the harvest is plentiful.
We formed many relationships with the Bread of Life staff we were there to assist, as well as
many Polish and Ukranian women and children with many needs. Polish families have shown
great generosity in taking in refugees for several months now. However, as you can imagine
with long term guests that speak a different language, the anticipation is strong that they
return to their home soon (by both parties!). But, there is no timetable and in many cases
there is no home remaining in Ukraine, literally. A new sense of home must be forged. All of
the teams that traveled to Poland remain in contact with our new friends/family to
encourage, pray for, and support as God leads.
This part is from Jennifer:
On a personal note , I will never forget the mother I met who fled Ukraine 9 months pregnant and had her baby when she reached Poland. The courage she showed to leave her home and go someplace completely unknown to her without the help of her husband (who stayed back to fight) in order to live, was inspiring to me. We smiled and cried together.
Our new prayer is a familiar prayer (The Lord’s prayer), but a new place for us → Poland and Ukraine. May your (God) Kingdom come to that place. Would God’s ways of righteousness, justice, mercy and love be planted, growing, and harvested just like all the lush fields of wheat and corn we saw across the land as we traveled from Krakow, Auschwitz, Kalisz, and Warsaw.
