I am part of a teacher team going to Karansi Tanzania in June 22 – July 7 to work with the Tanzania educators to teach principles behind the new Standard 1- Standard 3 syllabi focusing on math for Standard 4-Standard 7.
Tanzanian teachers receive the equivalent of a junior college training in education, which is 2 years. They are expected to be able to teach all subjects in grades 1-7. There are no opportunities for professional development to continue their training. The teachers that Perimeter Church sends are their only opportunity for in-service training.
In the village of Karansi few is any children graduated from their public schools, which tested in the bottom 5% in the nation. Few went on to secondary school. Perimeter, through Project Child, has funded the ongoing operation of a private school and directly meets the needs of its students by providing nourishing meals, medical care, clothing, improved curriculum, teacher training and spiritual development. As the students began to graduate from 7th grade, all have passed the national exam, which allowed them to continue their education. Their graduating classes now rank in the top ten percent in the nation.
