Obituary

Laurie Eugene (Gene) Haynes, 92, of Johns Creek, GA, passed away on November 1, 2023, peacefully at home. Born on February 17, 1931, in Richmond, VA, Gene was a loving husband, stepfather, grandfather, and friend.

Gene is survived by his wife, Lani Haynes, and stepdaughters Shannon Brabner (Bryan), Leslie King, and Kristin Storm (Greg). He was a beloved grandfather to his grandson Robert (Robbie) Lindner. He was preceded in death by his mother, Louise (Johnson) Lanuette, his father, George Haynes, and his brother, Kenneth Haynes (Connie).

After graduating high school, Gene became the lead guitarist in a country band. He would love country music for the rest of his life. Gene attended Virginia Tech for his higher education. He then served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 to 1952, and was honorably discharged as a Korean War veteran.

After leaving the Air Force, Gene joined Western Electric for ten years and then left to start his own successful home repair business. Gene retired at the age of 67, after several decades of hard work.

Gene was an active member of Perimeter Church for 10 years, where he found community and felt at home. He enjoyed country and ballroom dancing with his beloved wife, Lani, and had a passion for reading non-fiction. He was known to consult his dictionary daily and had a knack for inventing better ways to do things around the house. Gene had a special love for animals and country music. On Saturdays, he watched animal shows during the day and went country dancing at night.

Gene will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was tenderhearted toward others, especially children, and an encourager to all of us to be intentional in our thinking. Gene believed in asking “why and what if?” May his legacy live on through the memories and those he leaves behind.

Thank you for all your visits, thoughts and prayers especially during these past six months. Your friendship and love have been such an encouragement. We have seen the body of Christ in action.
