Hannah’s Testimony: A Tangible Encounter with God

This year was my fourth GO Journey to Guatemala to work alongside Perimeter’s Medical Missions Ministries partner. And the thing that keeps me coming back every time is God’s goodness and mystery in the ways in which He chooses to reveal Himself.

Being on a GO Journey can feel scary at times because it requires releasing control. But the truth is, we never had control in the first place. God can take our uncertainty and lack of control and turn it into a powerful display of His mercy and power. It’s so awesome!
One specific and supernatural example of this happened this year.

Every time I’ve been down to Guatemala, God has met me in a new and fresh way, showed me a different side of Himself, or reminded me of His abounding and steadfast love. The first year I went, I experienced people being supernaturally healed for the first time in my life. It was earth-shattering for me, seeing the depth and range of power and majesty of Jesus and how we as His children hold the keys to that same power when we speak in His name (John 14:12-14).

On each mission trip since, I’ve witnessed different kinds of supernatural healings from seeing a wheelchair-bound former missionary stand to watching an old woman’s uncontrollable head tremors cease. This trip, before I went, I asked God to reveal Himself to me in a specifically tangible way. I’m still not entirely sure why I asked this, but I distinctly remember putting this request before the Lord. And He met me in such an amazing way.

Here’s what happened:

On the second day of our clinics, I was assigned to a sharing station. At these clinics, we caravan to remote villages in Guatemala and set up day-long makeshift clinics with basic vitamins and medicines, doctor and dentist stations, childcare, and sharing stations. In the sharing stations, we are paired up with one or two other team members as well as a translator, and our primary job is to check in with all the people who come to visit the clinic, ask how we can pray for them, and share the Good News and love of Jesus. These stations are also where we’ve witnessed many healings.

On this particular Tuesday, our setup was pretty chaotic, and many of our sharing station pairings ended up getting switched around and mixed up. Amid the changes, I ended up being paired with Allison, who our team endearingly calls the “prayer warrior” because of her depth of faith and conviction when she prays. Allison noticed a man named Paolo, who was paralyzed in the right side of his body and walking with a cane. She had seen Paolo being prayed over earlier and wanted to continue praying for him, so she invited him over to our station. This was unconventional to the system we had in place, where team members called “runners” brought patients who had been seen by the doctor over to a sharing station when they were ready. However, God had a plan and purpose for Allison noticing Paolo. 

Paolo told us that he had been in an accident which had paralyzed half of his body five years ago. His right arm was stuck in a cast-like position across his midsection, and he was unable to lift it or move it at all. His right leg was stiff and weak, so he needed a cane to walk.

We first prayed for his arm, and miraculously, after some time, he was able to move his arm away from the position it had been frozen in AND even lift it all the way above his head. Incredible! Then we began to focus on praying for his leg. One thing I learned on this trip is that the physical body has responses to the spiritual world. For instance, when we laid hands on Paolo’s leg to begin praying, there was a startling degree of cold emanating from his leg, and as we prayed for him, his leg began to warm up.

After some time praying and seeing that he was making progress but still unable to walk properly, we thought to check and see the length of his legs and make sure they matched up. Sure enough, when we lifted his legs up parallel to the ground, we noticed a deficit in his right leg, being about 1-2 inches shorter than his left. Without missing a beat, the team began to pray for Paolo’s leg to grow out. I had never heard anyone pray for something like this, and despite seeing all that I had seen before, I still had a shadow of doubt. Yet, I laid my hands on his shin, holding his calf, and prayed with them.

After maybe 30 seconds, I felt a physical, tangible shift and internal extension in Paolo’s leg. It was unlike anything I’d ever experienced in a healing before; I quite literally felt his leg extend and grow out, just as we had been praying that it would! It left me speechless; I knew in that exact moment that God had healed Paolo’s leg and simultaneously answered my personal prayer to experience Him tangibly.

Paolo, who had been rather inexpressive throughout our whole interaction, began to smile and express himself more as we prayed for him. He was astonished at his leg growth, and after seeing it, he stood up and began to walk and move more freely, not fully reliant on his cane to walk as he had been when he arrived! He left that day walking lighter, quicker, and joyful. His healing not only inspired him, but also everyone else who was blessed to witness the Lord moving in that way.

It was incredible how God met me (and Paolo) in so many ways on this GO Journey. Seeing people come to faith, witnessing His healing power firsthand, and experiencing His presence among people from another culture showed me that His kingdom and power are far greater than I had ever imagined.

As Dr. Alb, our gracious host and director at Medical Missions Ministry in Guatemala, likes to say, “Mission trips aren’t just mission trips—they’re a date with Jesus.” After this GO Journey, I couldn’t agree more.
