Dear Family and Friends,

I’m excited about another mission trip to Tanzania this summer. This year’s trip will be very similar to the one I took in 2017. The team of teachers from Perimeter Church and School will train the teachers of Siha Leadership Academy in Karansi, Tanzania. Karansi is a small village between Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,341 ft) and Mt. Meru (14,977 ft). The village can now be found with Google Maps (village near “KKKT, Usharika wa Karansi”). The most exciting part of this year’s trip is that the team will include my favorite chorus/theater teacher/daughter, Rachel Munn!

This will be my third trip to Karansi. In 2003, the village was very poor, with limited electricity, many abandoned structures and a few hundred widows and orphans. At that time the school consisted of a two room building, two classrooms with about 50 kids. Our church’s sixteen year partnership with the village has focused on this Christian school and child sponsorship support.

In 2017, the physical structure of the school had grown to about 10 classrooms, a 2 story library and a computer room. While we were there a new outside wall and a concrete basketball area were under construction, along with several other minor upgrades to the grounds. The school had also been able to purchase several acres of land around the buildings. The school served about 300 students, grades pre-k through 7th. The academic improvements at the school and the child sponsorship program had led to true transformation of the village. Almost all of the 7th grade kids qualified to continue their education at the secondary school level. The village had seen much needed economic development.

In the last two years the school has continued to show excellent academic improvement. This past school year, the 7th grade graduating class scored the highest on the graduation test in the entire Siha District, in the top 5% of the Kilimanjaro Region and in the top 8% of the nation of Tanzania. The ministry in Karansi has also broadened to include business and healthcare related initiatives.

Where am I going?  Karansi, Tanzania; northeast Tanzania, near Arusha and Mt. Kilimanjaro

When am I going? June 27 – July 14

What will I be doing? Training math teachers, computer usage, coaching kids running/fitness
